Alinea is a conservation-sector intermediary organisation that supports partner organisations across Africa and internationally, strengthening their strategic communications, storytelling, and organisational narrative. Alinea’s communications work is directed primarily at donors and partners, demonstrating the value and impact of conservation work and helping partner organisations communicate more effectively with the audiences that matter most to them.

The Strategic Communications is responsible for enhancing Alinea’s visibility and that of its partners, managing donor and partner engagement, supporting internal communications across the organisation, and strengthening a coherent digital presence across communication platforms.

1.  Purpose of the Internship

The Communications Intern will support the Strategic Communications across both internal and external communications, with content creation and storytelling as a priority focus, turning Alinea’s programmes, partner work, and impact into compelling narratives for donor and partner audiences. The role also provides broad exposure to digital communications, media production, donor and partner-facing materials, and administrative functions.

The internship is designed to give a recent graduate practical, mentored workplace experience across the full range of a strategic communications function, as a foundation for a career in communications, media, marketing, public relations, or a related field, including the potential to grow into a Communications Officer role.

2.  Key Responsibilities

Content Creation & Storytelling (priority focus)

  • Research, draft, and refine human-interest and impact stories from Alinea’s partners and programmes, working from field notes, interviews, and source material.
  • Conduct interviews with staff, partners, and beneficiaries to surface story material, under supervisor
  • Draft social media content, captions, stories, and campaign
  • Develop articles, news updates, success stories, blogs, newsletters, and press
  • Help maintain a rolling content calendar and story pipeline for the
  • Support editing and proofreading of communication materials, with attention to narrative quality and

Donor & Partner Communications

  • Assist in developing donor updates, partner briefings, and impact
  • Support the production of presentation materials and talking points for donor and partner
  • Help tailor messaging and content for different donor and partner

Internal Communications

  • Support internal updates, staff newsletters, and cross-team
  • Help document and share organisational activities and milestones

Digital & Social Media Management

  • Manage and support Alinea’s social media
  • Schedule and publish content across digital
  • Monitor engagement and report on performance
  • Assist with website updates and digital content

Multimedia Production & Design

  • Capture photographs and videos during events and
  • Edit video content for digital
  • Design posters, flyers, infographics, banners, presentations, and social media graphics aligned with Alinea’s brand guidelines.

Events & Administrative Support

  • Support event communications and
  • Maintain organised digital archives of communications
  • Perform other communications-related duties assigned by the

4.  Required Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree obtained within the last two years in Communications, Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Digital Marketing, Graphic Design, or a related field.

Recent graduates with internship, volunteer, freelance, university project, or portfolio experience are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in the conservation, environment, or development sectors is an advantage but not required.

5.  Required Skills and Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Strong computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft
  • Experience with Canva and/or Adobe Creative
  • Video editing skills using tools such as CapCut, Premiere Pro, or DaVinci
  • Photography and videography
  • Familiarity with social media management and digital communication

Personal Competencies

6.  Working Arrangements

This is a full-time internship position based at Alinea’s office, Monday to Friday during official working hours. Occasional travel and support outside normal working hours may be required for events and organisational activities.

7.  Learning, Mentorship & Development

The intern will receive regular guidance and feedback from their supervisor, with structured check-ins to review progress against deliverables and agree learning goals. The role is designed to build a broad communications skillset, spanning storytelling, donor and partner communications, internal communications, and digital media , with the potential to grow into a Communications Officer role for a strong performer. Where relevant, the intern will be given opportunities to:

  • Shadow senior communications staff on donor and partner-facing
  • Take on increasing responsibility across internal and external communications as skills
