The Final Count – Global Big Day
Saturday 9th May was World Migratory Bird Day, and Zambia participated by joining in Global Big Day – the worldwide bird count. Over 30 teams bird spotted around the country, including from within our National Parks – Kafue, Kasanka, Lochinvar, Lower Zambezi, Mosi-oa Tunya and South Luangwa.
Worldwide, over 50,000 people went birding, keeping a watch out in their own gardens and local spaces and parks – this year having to adhere to their local health advice because of COVID-19.
Totally worldwide:
- 6,479 species recorded
- 62,296 photos were shared with the Macaulay Library
- 1,922 audio recordings were shared with the Macaulay Library
Zambia recorded 416 species, coming in 16th globally, and 2nd in Africa, after Kenya who came 1st, recording an amazing 608 species!
You can find out more information on which species were spotted here in Zambia by visiting Global Big Day’s website.
Birdwatch hopes to hold the next countrywide bird count in October. If you would like to join in then contact them at Birdwatch Zambia.
